Romanticism and the Revival of Religion

Abstract

|
A Romantic Revival in English literature may be said to be followed by a Revival of Religion as shown in the Oxford movement and Methodism. These two religious movements aimed to rebuild a medivalism with enthusiastic ardor alongside a new awakening of spirit. In this respect Methodists, especially criticized as enthusiasts, should be called true romantics, for the romanticism connected with idealism corresponds with religion. Of Wesley brothers, Charles represents such example. A generation later the Romantic Revival was greatly influenced by the Methodists. Here comes a new approach to understanding the interrelationship between religion and a romantic revival.
